The Rock Island Rotary Club has adopted Earl Hanson Elementary, in Rock Island as a part of the Rock island School District's Adopt a School Program! The club participates in many school activities as well as coordinating "Earl Hanson Tuesday" each month at the club weekly lunch. On Earl Hanson Tuesday, members bring in an item that the school needs the most, whether it's toothbrushes, band-aids or socks. Regardless of the activity, the school confirms what we already know: We make a difference with our presence!
Don’t wait to let someone else do it. Step up to the plate (baseball lingo) and get involved. Thanks to all current, future and potential volunteers!
Current highlights:
- Over 130 summer packets were delivered to the school and are being distributed this week. Thanks to all who contributed scissors, paper, activities, crayons and/or cash! Earl Hanson Tuesdays are on hold until school starts in August. Many, many thanks to Rotarians who volunteer: Tricia Barron, Paul Erickson, Tom Hammar, Lo Milani, Bud Phillis, Tom Phillis, Gary Rowe, Holly Sparkman, Bill Stengel, and—of course—Anne McGlynn!
- Jay Stanley reports that dictionaries will be delivered to Rock Island-Milan schools in mid-August. Jay is seeking volunteers to speak about your careers during the upcoming school year. Start
planning now for how you can help next year!
- Thank you volunteers for Join Hands Day! This year volunteers will be mulching, palnting and cleaning up. Also there are improvements being made to the baseball field, helping to build a new playground and adding a butterfly garden. Volunteers are asked to help from 9:00 a.m. - Noon. Lunch is provided by the Booster Club.
- More important Earl Hanson dates: June 4—Earl Hanson Year-End Awards Ceremony and June 5—6th Grade Recognition Ceremony. Rotarians are invited to attend!
- The 1st and 2nd grade classrooms would love to have any Rock Island Rotarians come by between 9-11 and 1-3 to listen to the children read. No commitment is required. Just call the school in advance so they know to expect you (phone: 793-5930). This is a
very easy way to volunteer and still make a difference in the children’s lives.
- Every second Tuesday of the month is Earl Hanson Tuesday at Rock Island Rotary! On March 10 members brought in over 100 pairs of new underwear for the school! Tricia Barron will announce what the next need will be at a future meeting in April.
- Help is needed with math tutoring for 5th and 6th grade basic skills. Earl Hanson Teacher Kate Lievens could use two or three more members to help.
